WHEN DOES YOUR PET NEED A VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGIST?

Your family veterinarian is the best person to decide if your pet needs further examination by a specialist. Referral indicates your veterinarian’s proficiency in identifying conditions which may benefit from specialized diagnosis and treatment.

THE EXAMINATION

The first visit involves a comprehensive ophthalmic examination and usually takes 30 minutes, but can be longer if additional procedures are required. If surgery is indicated, an estimate of the costs associated with the surgery will be provided.

CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS

Purebred dogs can be screened for inherited eye disease by a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist. Registration and certification is available through OFA.

FOLLOW UP CARE

Communication between your veterinarian and the ophthalmologist is essential. After your pet’s initial
visit, and following any future exams, procedures or surgeries, your veterinarian will be provided with updated referral reports concerning your pet’s condition.

FEES

The fees for service provided are usual and customary for the type of specialty service offered.
